Over the past twenty years I have shared the following true story with countless friends and relatives in times of illness, distress and tragedy. My hope is that these spiritually-driven words have calmed and healed others as they calm and heal me every day.
Connie’s husband Ed was diagnosed with cancer. As the doctor explained the details, Connie became alarmed and began to cry. She shared with me what her husband said to her in that moment, and it has been a reminder of my faith and the promise of eternal life as a believer of Jesus Christ. He said,
“No matter what, I will be fine.”
She continued on with “but…but…but…”
And he stressed over and over with the same words,
“NO MATTER WHAT, I WILL BE FINE.”
She understood and was comforted and their lives went on.
I am happy to say that, though they have gone through more bouts with cancer, they are survivors and are living a full and joyful life traveling and spending quality time with their children and grandchildren.
Earlier this year I was diagnosed with cancer, and though the doctor assured me I would be cured, the dark thoughts of dying crept into my head. While sharing the news with a few family members and a very small circle of friends, I felt positivity and comfort flow through me as I spoke the words that Connie and Ed gave me. I am happy to report I am cancer-free today and no matter what I will be fine.
